Learn more about the role of a Doula

A doula is a birth support person. ⁣⁣
Someone to work with a mother and her family unit through her pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
A doula should not be confused with a midwife. As your doulas, we will not provide any medical treatment or advice to you or your baby. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

As your doulas our role through your pregnancy is to speak with you about your birth plans and aspirations, guide you through any fears and anxiety you may hold toward birth and to help honour your birth plan.

A doula works with the mother to help her understand what to expect during labour. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

A doula assists a woman through her labour by providing emotional, physical and social support. ⁣⁣

This support may look different from one woman to another. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
– You may need emotional support and a calm and empowering voice to guide you through contractions ⁣⁣
– You may need a massage
⁣⁣- You may need someone to hold the shower head while you labour in the water  
⁣⁣- Your partner might need reassurance
– You may want us to help you create a calming birth space free of stress and angst
Whatever your needs, as your doulas we are 100% here for you as you labour and deliver your baby into the world in which ever way you choose.⁣⁣⁣⁣

We will check in with you and provide postpartum support. In the postpartum period a doula can assist you as you transition into motherhood and ensure that your body is healing and you as a mother are being nurtured. ⁣⁣

This may be in the form of providing meals, providing breastfeeding support, offering an ear to listen or shoulder to cry on, connecting you to services or providing helpful resources, providing support with baby such as, bathing.⁣⁣⁣⁣

A doula’s role is diverse and can adapt to the needs of a mother. ⁣⁣A doula’s role is to assist in a positive birth experience because this is something that every birthing woman deserves. ⁣⁣Because as this quote says so perfectly “If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it”.
