Aly got kicked (accidentally) by someone on the dancefloor at the local pub and needed surgery for a ruptured ACL 🕺🏼

Talia birthed all of her babies within 3 hours of getting to the hospital 👶🏼👶🏼👶🏼

Aly’s bub taught her a lesson in patience with 3 days of broken waters ⛅️

We both love cruising! 🛳️

We both love a cocktail, Talia’s fave is a fruit tingle and Aly loves a mojito 🍹

Blindly going along with whatever you are offered throughout pregnancy can set you up for failure in your birth and postpartum period❗️

“Going with the flow” is handing your power over to the clinician 🤷🏼‍♀️

And so the ripple effect begins..
Agreed to growth scans without understanding why you needed them.
“Big baby” found on the scan. Offered early induction of labour. Induction leading to medicalised birth. Birth weight “normal”. Lactation delayed due to medicated birth. Difficulty breastfeeding.
This is a common story we hear and the line “I didn’t know I had a choice or an alternative” is a line we are hearing too often from women. And it’s not the only ripple effect story we hear. All from a choice made in pregnancy.
Now we aren’t suggesting say no to everything, because that’s unreasonable, sometimes unsafe. But what we are saying is understand what you are agreeing to!

The math just isn’t adding up 🥴

We acknowledge that many Australian women are fortunate enough to receive paid maternity leave from their employer as well as paid parental leave from the government.

But many mothers only have access to paid parental leave from the government which equates to 5 months…

We posted a poll 2 days ago asking if you felt that paid parental leave was long enough and 98% of you said NO.
We also asked if you felt that breastfeeding rates would be improved if paid parental leave was longer and 70% of you said YES.

Australia has seen an increase in paid parental leave recently from 18 weeks to 20 weeks which is fantastic! But imagine the improvement in exclusive breastfeeding rates in Australia if paid parental leave was 6 months to support exclusive breastfeeding.

This years World Breastfeeding Week theme is making breastfeeding and work, work. And how does paid parental leave tie into this?
Well, we see it like this:
Women shouldn’t have to choose between their careers and breastfeeding so before we can support women with breastfeeding and returning to the workforce, we need to place more value on the extensive hours and career sacrifices that come with breastfeeding and support women to reach their breastfeeding goals, in particular reaching the WHO recommendation of 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding all whilst being financially supported to do so.

We understand this week comes with big emotions for many, so please, engage as much or as little with this content as you wish. But please remember, this week is something we are passionate about as mothers and midwives so this week is not a projection of judgement to anyone who did not breastfeed.
